Welcome

The history of chocolate covered pretzels is difficult to pinpoint, however the earliest recording of pretzels can be traced back to a monastery somewhere in the region of Southern France and Northern Italy as far back as 610 AD. The original version of the pretzel was a strip of dough, given to children for memorizing parts of the Bible. It was called 'pretiola' which is Latin for reward. The pretiola quickly gained popularity and was made in other parts of Europe such as Germany, where it took on the German name, bretzel. And along the way, the bretzel and the pretiola became the pretzel!

Though the exact history of the chocolate covered pretzel is also vague, there are references that suggest that the chocolate covered pretzel was actually invented by Herr Franz Joseph Liebniz in 1544 in Hamburg. Owning a pretzel bakery, Herr Franz's shop was close to a chocolatier. While this hasn't been verified -  it sure makes for a good chocolate story.  In the end, for all chocolate lovers, where the chocolate-covered pretzel was first created isn't nearly as important as the fact that this scrumptious combination was created!

While the United States has long consumed pretzels, it is only in the last couple of decades that the chocolate covered pretzel phenomena has gained momentum and become a favorite chocolate treat! Biting into and tasting the crunch of the pretzel combined with the richness of the chocolate covering has the makings of heaven on earth! .
